Scholarship Description:

The DAAD scholarship program provides financial support for international students to pursue postgraduate studies in the fields of fine art, design, visual communication, and film in Germany. The program also aims to promote the exchange of experience and networking among scholars.

  • Postgraduate or continuing course of study: The scholarship can be used to fund a master's degree, a Ph.D., or a continuing education program in the fields of fine art, design, visual communication, and film.
  • Fields Fine Art, Design, Visual Communication and Film: The scholarship is specifically for studies in these fields.
  • Exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues: The scholarship program also aims to promote the exchange of experience and networking among scholars. This is done through events and activities that bring scholars together to share their work and ideas.

Funding Duration:

For Master's degree programs:

  • The funding duration varies, ranging from 10 to 24 months, depending on the length of the selected study program.
  • Typically commences on October 1st of the following year or earlier if a German language course is undertaken prior to the main study program.
  • Scholarships are granted for the standard study period of the chosen program, with a maximum limit of 24 months.
  • In your application, specify the entire duration for which you seek funding. For instance, if you intend to pursue a 2-year degree program, indicate a two-year scholarship duration in your application.
  • After the first year of study, an evaluation of your academic progress will determine the continuation of the scholarship if it is evident that you will successfully complete your program within a reasonable timeframe.

For complementary studies that do not lead to a final qualification:

  • The funding covers one academic year.
  • Typically begins on October 1st of the following year or earlier if a German language course precedes the study program.

Scholarship Benefits:

  • A monthly payment of 934 euros
  • Travel allowance
  • One-off study allowance
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

  • Monthly rent subsidy
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family. Please also read our important information for scholarship applicants / section F, point 3.
  • In the case of a disability or chronic illness: subsidy for additional costs which result from the disability or chronic illness and are not covered by other funding providers: Further information
  • Green Mobility Top Up (Support for climate-friendly travel) or partial reimbursement of carbon offset payments for air travel


To enable scholarship holders to learn German in preparation for their stay in the country, DAAD offers the following services:

  • Payment of course fees for an online language course after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter
  • if necessary: German language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the study visit in Germany; the DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and project. Participation in a language course is compulsory if the language of instruction or working language is German at the German host institution.
  • Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the scholarship period
  • Reimbursement of the fee for a TestDaF or DSH test, which you can take either in your home country after you have received your Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany during your funding period.


Please note that the DAAD does not cover tuition fees.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you have gained a first university degree in the fields of Fine Art, Design, Visual Communication and Film at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study programme.

Selection criteria

  • the artistic qualification and artistic maturity, measured by study achievements and work samples
  • the quality of the project as measured by the study plan and the letter of motivation

Application Deadlines:

Application deadlines are annually updated and typically follow a similar timeframe as the previous year. For the current dates, please refer to the following:

  • Deadline: November 30, 2023
  • Commencement of funding: October 2024

Application Requirements:

When submitting your application documents, they may be scanned in an uncertified format and uploaded to the DAAD portal. However, please be aware that the DAAD reserves the right to request certified copies of these documents.

Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD portal:

  • Online application form
  • Comprehensive CV in tabular format
  • A statement explaining your academic and personal motivations for the intended study project in Germany (motivation letter, 1 - 3 pages). Please review our essential information for scholarship applicants in Section A, point 2.
  • For Master's degree or postgraduate study programs leading to a final qualification: "Information about your preferred master programs" form
  • If available: A letter of acceptance from the host university. If you haven't received admission notification at the time of application, this must be submitted before the funding period begins. It is your responsibility to ensure timely admission to the host university, as a Scholarship Award Letter from the DAAD is only valid if you are admitted.
  • For complementary studies not leading to a final qualification: Confirmation of supervision from a German university teacher
  • Also required for all applicants:
    • Current Transcript of Records with individual grade(s), including an explanation of the grading system
    • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s): The certificate must be provided before the scholarship-supported study program begins if studies are not yet completed at the time of application.
    • Proof of German language proficiency per the European Framework of References for Languages or the Test-DaF for programs in German. The language certificate should not be more than two years old.
    • Proof of English language proficiency in accordance with the chosen study program's requirements in English (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS). The language certificate should not be more than two years old.
    • A list of all cited work samples with detailed information (size, date of creation, place, etc.)
    • A declaration confirming authorship of works of art or indicating the names of collaborators in joint projects. For collaborative work, the applicant's individual contribution must be clearly defined or described. Please refrain from uploading work samples or portfolios to the DAAD portal.

Submission of Work Samples to the DAAD Media Database: If your scholarship application meets the specified criteria and is complete, you will receive a link to upload your work samples to the DAAD media database no later than December 15. Please ensure that you upload the work samples to the Media Database by January 10 (CET) at the latest.

All application documents must be submitted in German or English. Documents in other languages should be translated.

The application process consists of two steps:

  1. Submission of application documents

  2. Submission of work samples

  3. Submission of Application Documents: You must submit your application documents online via the DAAD portal. Please note that access to the application portal is only available during the active application period. Once the application deadline has passed, the portal for this program will not be accessible until the next application period.

Application Location: Online through the DAAD Portal and the DAAD Media Database.

Important Note: To ensure the validity of your application, make sure you submit all required documents to both the DAAD portal (see Item 1) and the DAAD media database (see Item 2). The DAAD portal closes at 24:00 hrs. (CET or CEST) on the final application day. Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered, so it's your responsibility to ensure the completeness of your submission. Rest assured that the DAAD retains application documents, while your personal data is handled in compliance with relevant data protection regulations.
