Scholarship Description:

Fulbright Canada – Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Fellowships 2024/2025

Fulbright Canada and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation (PETF) have jointly established an exclusive Chair in Contemporary Public Policy. This exceptional opportunity will enable a distinguished U.S. academic and accomplished applied researcher to:

1) Conduct in-depth research for a semester (4 months) in Montreal, Quebec, hosted by PETF and a collaborating university,

2) Engage as a facilitator, teacher, or speaker in one or two of the PETF’s Institutes of Engaged Leadership, while also contributing to the planning stages,

3) Offer advice, share expertise, and mentor PETF's doctoral scholars, aiding their development in leadership skills, study strategies, and experiential learning that enriches their academic pursuits,

4) Participate actively in initiatives connected to both PETF and Fulbright Canada, including the creation and launch of educational events for the general public and the communities of both foundations.

Fulbright Canada and PETF are searching for a distinguished academic whose research aligns with one of PETF’s core pillars: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, and People and their Natural Environment. Additionally, candidates should possess relevant expertise tied to PETF's 2022-2025 scientific theme on Global Economies in the context of Canada in the World: The Future of Foreign Policy.

This Chair will serve as a mentor and guide to the upcoming generation of innovative scholars, fostering their growth as public intellectuals and active leaders who make meaningful contributions to their communities.

About The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation has the goal of enabling exceptional doctoral researchers to transform into proactive leaders who make a significant difference in their communities and within their organizations. The foundation supports the growth of these leaders by providing a three-year program that focuses on hands-on learning and educational content delivered by both Fellows and Mentors.   • Base grant:
    • Recipients coming to Canada will receive a fixed amount.
    • Faculty on sabbatical, leave, or retirement can use their Fulbright support concurrently.
  • Postdoctoral Research Award: $30,000 for a single academic year (9 months).
  • Distinguished Chair: $50,000 for an academic year (9 months).
  • Visiting Research Chairs: $25,000 for a single semester (4 months).
  • Traditional (All Disciplines) Award: $12,500 for one semester (4 months) or $25,000 for an academic year (9 months).
  • Fulbright Carlos-Rico Award for North American Studies: $12,500 for one semester in Canada.
  • Specialists Program: $200 per day, plus coverage for international travel and local expenses.
  • All Disciplines Flex awards:
    • The stipend is a set amount of $6,250 for every two-month segment.
  • Other grant allowances:
    • Expenses related to the Fall Orientation in Ottawa, Ontario.
    • Up to $1,000 for travel to a different city or region in Canada for a series of speaking engagements.
  • Special grant benefits:
    • Up to $4,000 for community-centered environmental projects.
    • Up to $8,000 for collaborating with local partners in any form of activity, event, or program that would have a positive impact on the community.


Eligible Nationalities:

This fellowship is open to US citizens.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be U.S. citizens (Permanent residence is not sufficient).
  • Hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree as appropriate, unless otherwise specified in the award description.
     Professionals and artists should have equivalent experience with recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments.
  • Be proficient in English.
  • Be proficient in French should the requirements of the project and host institution require it.
  • Be in compliance with all J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines.
  • Be in compliance with all governmental regulations regarding visas, immigration, travel and residency.
Applicants must not
  • Hold permanent residency status in Canada.
  • Reside in Canada; or
  • Have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period immediately preceding the date of application.
     A period of nine months or more during a calendar year is considered to constitute a full year abroad.

American scholars download the application instructions on the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program website, and complete the online application.

When starting your application, please ensure that in the Country Selection stage, you Select Canada.

You may then Select the Award Number and Award Name.  On each Fulbright Canada Awards page, are a list of awards with a corresponding Award Number. As you complete your application, you will also identify your Preferred Host Institution. 

Applicants to the Fulbright Canada Traditional Scholar Award should arrange affiliation and include a letter of invitation from their preferred host institution(s).

For applicants to research chair awards, unless otherwise identified, formal letters of invitation are not required and not encouraged; however, applicants are encouraged to contact the institution to discuss research interests.  Many of the Fulbright Canada Distinguished Chairs and Research Chairs are interdisciplinary, so please browse the various themes to find the Fulbright Canada Awards that best suit your expertise.

Should you be recommended for a Fulbright Canada Award, you may be asked to confirm your preferred Fulbright Canada Award and Host institution (e.g. "Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Society and Culture, University of Alberta").  You may also be asked to identify up to three Alternate Awards (additional Fulbright Canada Awards and their corresponding host institutions). This allows recommended applicants to be considered for multiple awards, enhancing their chance of placement.
