Scholarship Description:

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) Lendület and Momentum Program is a grant program that aims to attract and support outstanding young researchers in Hungary. The program provides funding for research teams to be set up at host institutions with a view to conducting research on new research themes.


The Lendület Program was launched in 2010, and the Momentum Program was launched in 2019. The two programs are similar in their goals and structure, but the Momentum Program is specifically designed for young researchers who are returning to Hungary after completing their PhD studies abroad.


The Lendület and Momentum Program have been very successful in attracting and supporting outstanding young researchers in Hungary. Since the launch of the Lendület Program, over 200 research teams have been established, and the Momentum Program has already funded over 50 research teams.

Scholarship Benefits:

Eligible Nationalities:

The Lendület and Momentum Program are open to international students. However, there is a preference given to researchers who are already living abroad and have received international recognition for their research conducted abroad, and are planning to return to Hungary.

You could apply in two categories:

The Lendület I. grant can be applied for by promising young researchers who show outstanding and continuously increasing performance, who are younger than 38 years old (born after August 31, 1983), who obtained their PhD degree before September 1, 2017, and who previously had a prestigious domestic ( OTKA, MTA Bolyai, MTA Premium) or international postdoctoral or research grants.

The Momentum II. Internationally recognized leading researchers with consistently outstanding and growing performance who are
younger than 45 (born after August 31, 1976) can apply for support in prestigious domestic (OTKA, MTA Bolyai, MTA Prémium) or international postdoctoral or research applications, or They have already won support in the framework of the Lendület Program or other international tenders comparable to the Lendület grant.
