Founded in 2015, the SMYAL LGBTQ+ Youth Leadership Awards provide a total of up to $30,000 annually to 5 to 8 student leaders, helping them begin their post-secondary education while honoring their community impact.
This opportunity is ideal for young LGBTQ+ students who have demonstrated resilience and leadership in advocacy, community service, or social justice initiatives.
Degree Level
The LGBTQ+ Youth Leadership Awards 2026 are available for students starting:
- 2-Year College Programs
- 4-Year College Programs
- Trade School Programs
- Technical School Programs
Applicants must be entering their first semester of post-secondary education by Fall 2026.
Available Subjects
The scholarship is open to students pursuing any field of study.
There are no academic subject restrictions, making this award available for students in all educational disciplines.

Eligible Nationalities
The scholarship is open to students in the United States, specifically those from the:
- Washington, D.C. Metro Area
- Maryland
- Virginia
Students who live in the D.C. Metro Area but attended high school elsewhere may still be eligible.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the LGBTQ+ Youth Leadership Awards 2026, applicants must:
- Self-identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community
- Be 24 years old or younger
- Have attended high school or completed a GED in the D.C. Metro Area
- Be starting their first semester of post-secondary education by Fall 2026
- Demonstrate leadership, personal growth, and community impact
Eligible applicants may include:
- Graduating high school seniors
- Students completing a GED
- Students who have taken one or two gap years
Current college students returning to higher education are not eligible.
Application Procedure

Essay Prompt:
