Scholarship Description:

The Utrecht Sylff Scholarships are available to qualified individuals, including exceptional graduates from University College Utrecht and outstanding graduates from Utrecht University's Economics and Business Economics program. The scholarship amounts vary but are generally a minimum of $25,000 per year for non-EU students and a minimum of $10,000 per year for EU students. Approximately three scholarships are awarded, and these scholarships are made possible through the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF).











Aim of the Programme: 


The objective of the Utrecht Sylff Scholarship is to provide exceptional prospective graduates who are currently enrolled in University College Utrecht or pursuing a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Economics with the chance to pursue a master's program in Humanities or Social Sciences, which also encompasses Economics, at Utrecht University. It's important to note that this scholarship initiative is extremely competitive, and only the most outstanding candidates are considered for a Sylff grant. Applicants vying for this grant should exhibit the potential for leadership qualities as a key criterion.

Scholarship Benefits:

As this is an international programme, the scholarship is in US dollars. The amount is variable, depending on nationality (see above). The Sylff Scholarship is intended to make a significant contribution towards the costs of travel and living expenses while studying in Utrecht. You must find additional funding to be able to fully finance your study and stay.

  • At least 25,000 USD per year for non-EU students, but variable
  • At least 10,000 USD per year for EU students, but variable

Eligible Nationalities:

This scholarship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must meet the following eligibility criteria in order to be considered for this scholarship:

  1. Be a student or recent graduate of one of the programmes mentioned above.
  2. Hold a non-Dutch passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (“Studiefinanciering”).
  3. Have been admitted to one of the international Master’s programmes of Utrecht University in the field of Humanities or Social Sciences (including Economics).
  4. Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch residence permit (if applicable)

Application Procedure:

It is not possible to apply for the Utrecht Sylff Scholarship. Candidates will be nominated by their Faculty. The deadline for nominations is 1 April.
