2016 Doctoral Fellowships at University of Hamburg, Germany



University of Hamburg is offering doctoral fellowships to learn any of the courses offered by the university. International students can apply for these fellowships. The university provides modern educational and research environments that will enable students and researchers to face current challenges and to focus on knowledge as a principle driving force for development. The University of Hamburg is one of the younger German universities. When enrolling at the University, all prospective students must submit proof of adequate German proficiency (language certificate) at the latest by the beginning of their first semester. Submission deadlines are 1 April for summer semester enrollment and 1 October for winter semester enrollment.




  • Scholarships are available for pursuing doctoral research programme.

  • Scholarships are awarded for the courses offered by the university.

  • The scholarship amounts to €1,200 per month plus up to €1,000 per funding year for materials and travel expenses. It includes a monthly childcare allowance of €154.



Eligibility Criteria:

The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this Fellowship:


  1. Applicants must have graduated with above-average grades and intend to pursue their doctoral project at Universität Hamburg.

  2. Please note: Do not apply for funding prior to having completed their master’s degree (or Magister). Applications without transcripts will not be considered at the time of the conference of the election committee ZANF (central committee for the promotion of young scientists), which usually confers in June/July for October-scholarships and in January for April-scholarships.

  3. HmbNFG-scholarships are open to all Hamburg students who meet the requirements. However, students of medicine (UKE) can only apply if their main topic for the doctoral study lies mainly within another faculty, such as medical psychology, pharmacy, biology, chemistry or physics. The standard procedure for students of medicine at the UKE is to write course-related doctoral theses.

  4. Basic scholarship: Applicants university graduation should not date back more than one year. If their final exam is longer ago, chances of receiving a scholarship are reduced. In special cases we may also consider applicants who graduated up to three years back (absolute max!), for instance, when family-related or health reasons have prevented them from continuing sooner.

  5. Completion scholarship (alternative): They are a university graduate employed as a research associate at a University or research institution in Hamburg. appliants employment period must not exceed 4 years (absolute max!).

  6. Scholarship funding, generally granted for a year, should succeed employment immediately. Exceptions will be made for special cases. They may be allowed 4 years of employment plus 3 more years of work (absolute max!) if family-related reasons prevented them from continuing sooner.

  7. In some faculties successful applicants will become members of the Graduate Schools of their faculties resp. have to apply for this membership.



Eligible Nationalities: International students can apply for these doctoral fellowships.



Entrance Requirements:




  • Applicants must have an excellent master or equivalent degree: G.P.A. higher than 3.0 in the American system, or a grade higher than 2.0 in the German system or equivalent.

  • Sound German language skills are essential for applicants academic success at Universität Hamburg. When enrolling at the University, all prospective students must submit proof of adequate German proficiency (language certificate) at the latest by the beginning of their first semester.   • income assessment (calculation sheet B)

    •  tabular CV including areas of concentration within their field or major



  • final transcript or, if necessary, graded proof of completed coursework and examinations

  • research proposal for their doctoral degree project with project plan and timetable

  • evaluation from dissertation supervisor o evaluation from another faculty member.
