The Asia Foundation Development Fellows initiative is an engaging and versatile learning experience tailored for exceptionally talented individuals from Asia, who are below the age of 40. The program is aimed at enhancing their leadership capabilities, knowledge in Asian development, professional connections, and global exposure. Rooted in the Foundation's nearly seventy years of dedication to nurturing the region's most promising future leaders, the program seeks to continue this tradition.

Program Overview:

The Asia Foundation Development Fellows program encompasses the following key elements:

Spring 2024: Leadership Training Program & Study Tour Location: Cambodia, February 18 to March 1, 2024

The Leadership Dialogue and Exchange program within the Asia-Pacific region offers a series of interactive modules for leadership training. These modules are led by executive coaches and encompass activities such as visits to established development practitioners, thought leaders, policy experts, and local innovators. The program also includes short assignments and sessions focusing on self-care and well-being for leaders. With the overarching goal of bolstering leadership potential, the training modules concentrate on honing strategic thinking, adept decision-making, and the cultivation of critical perspectives. Participants engage in enhancing problem-solving skills, managing change, and introducing innovative leadership and management techniques. Through site visits, fellows get the opportunity to explore effective approaches that foster positive impact and promote a deeper understanding of development. This program has previously been held in various countries, including the Philippines, Nepal, Mongolia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore, and Korea, utilizing local contexts to explore theories of change and international development practices.

Fall 2024: Leadership Dialogue and Exchange Program Location: United States, October 13 to 26, 2024

The Leadership Dialogue and Exchange Program extends the themes addressed in the spring session. This program phase allows fellows to further establish personal connections within their cohort and develop fresh international outlooks and support networks. During the span of two weeks, participants partake in an extensive array of activities, policy discussions, and unique learning opportunities organized across cities including San Francisco, Washington, DC, and another location in the United States. This segment aims to provide fellows with comprehensive insights, foster policy dialogues, and deliver distinctive leadership development experiences.

Scholarship Benefits:

Professional Development Award:

A grant of up to US$5,000 will be provided to each chosen Fellow. This monetary award enables Fellows to create customized plans for advancing their leadership skills and pertinent professional expertise in areas pivotal to their career advancement. Recipients will be tasked with devising personalized, year-long strategies that could encompass endeavors such as enrolling in specialized training programs or short courses, engaging in language studies, attending significant regional conferences or workshops, or participating in a series of other enriching activities.

Executive Coaching & Mentoring:

The Asia Foundation boasts a wealth of insights in the realm of leadership development, backed by a proven track record and unwavering dedication spanning Asia and the Pacific. Building upon the Foundation's regional network and local capabilities, the program extends tailored mentorship support that aligns with the individual backgrounds and professional aspirations of each Fellow. Furthermore, Fellows will benefit from a designated number of one-on-one executive coaching sessions throughout the duration of their fellowship year.

Eligible Nationalities:

This fellowship is open to nationals or citizens of the following countries and region where The Asia Foundation has programs: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Islands, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.

Eligibility Criteria:

Asia Foundation Development Fellows must:

• Have a demonstrable record of experience and accomplishment related to The Asia Foundation’s fields of expertise: governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment and gender equality, environment and climate action, and regional cooperation;
• Be thoughtful, committed, respected and inspirational leaders within their professional fields and within their larger community;
• Be under 40 years of age by January 1, 2024;
• Be conversant in English (TOEFL exam results are not required);
• Be available and able to participate in all program components on the program dates specified; and
