Eligible Nationalities:

The Leadership for Change program (Germany) provides support to young individuals from the Global South and Eastern Europe who are dedicated to advancing social, religious, and ecumenical causes through three key avenues:

  1. Financial assistance for pursuing postgraduate degrees in Germany (including master’s, doctorate, and exceptional cases of post-doctorate) in thematic areas aligned with Brot für die Welt's mission.
  2. Supplementary programs focusing on development, religious studies, leadership training, and guidance for executing initiative projects.
  3. Networking opportunities among scholarship recipients, Brot für die Welt, and various civil society networks.

Through their scholarships, Brot für die Welt (BfdW) fosters the growth of a global community of experts dedicated to its mission. These young scholars serve as catalysts for change, reinforcing the societal and developmental contributions of NGOs and churches in the Global South and Eastern Europe.

Eligibility Criteria:

This scholarship program is designed for young adults from developing countries in Eastern Europe and other regions (often referred to as the Global South). They're looking for applicants who:

  • Are highly motivated to help others and make a positive social impact (strong social commitment).
  • Show potential to become leaders in their field (leadership potential).
  • Are pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in Germany, focusing on development policy or theology.

Plus points for some applicants:

If you're nominated by an organization that works on these issues (like NGOs, churches, or Protestant universities in your region), your application will get a closer look. These organizations might be where you work, hope to work, or volunteer.

Open to everyone!

Even if you aren't nominated by an organization, don't worry! Independent applicants can still compete for about a third of the available scholarships.

Application Procedure:

Personal Requirements:

  • Demonstration of leadership potential and dedication to social or religious causes
  • Citizenship in a country supported by Brot für die Welt, and for theologians, affiliation with one of the member churches of the World Council of Churches
  • Exceptional academic performance exceeding standards Age limit of 40 years

Formal Requirements:

  • Enrollment in a program related to Brot für die Welt's strategic topics and/or the promotion of ecumenism
  • Fulfillment of admission criteria for the desired degree program in Germany
  • Residency in Germany for no more than 15 months at the intended start of studies (excluding training periods)
  • Submission of a proposal outlining an initiative project to be pursued during the scholarship period

Selection Procedure Information:

  • Applications are accepted continuously throughout the year
  • A committee convenes every 1 to 2 months to review and approve scholarship applications
  • Applicants are encouraged to submit their documents at least 4 months prior to the program's commencement.
