What you'll study

  • Thesis: A substantial written work of 12,000–15,000 words.
  • Supporting Component: This may include a portfolio and/or reports based on practical work related to one or more objects that will contribute to the proposed thesis for a future MLitt or DPhil.
  • Two Additional Options (choose one set):
    • Option A: Two examination papers, which can include a mix of language and non-language subjects, with a year-long survey course on Islamic art among the options.
    • Option B: Two essays, each ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 words.

Entry requirements

Applicants are generally expected to hold, or be on track to achieve, a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honors in a relevant field. This may include Islamic studies, Islamic history, Middle Eastern history, anthropology of the Middle East, or a language-focused degree in Arabic, Persian, or Ottoman Turkish.

  • US applicants: A minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is typically required.
  • Language Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in Arabic, Persian, or Ottoman Turkish is necessary for engaging with primary sources in their original language for the study of Islamic art.
  • Research Potential: Admission decisions will consider the applicant's academic history, written work, and references that indicate both intention and potential for future research endeavors.
  • Publications: Prior publications are not a requirement for admission.
