The Gilman Program is dedicated to assisting outstanding students who have a desire to pursue education or internships in Portugal, and this transformative chance is made possible by the Gilman-FLAD Scholarship.
This collaborative effort between the Gilman Scholarship Program and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) was established in 2020. It offers a competitive opportunity for underrepresented U.S. students to engage in studies in Portugal through SiPN, a program that fosters collaboration between the United States and Portugal while highlighting Portugal's appeal as a learning destination. This initiative also enables students to learn Portuguese, a language of vital importance.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, often referred to as the Gilman Scholarship, is a U.S. government-funded initiative that provides financial support for American undergraduate students who aim to study or intern abroad. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
Named after Benjamin A. Gilman, a former U.S. Representative from New York, the scholarship aims to increase the diversity of students participating in international education experiences and to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations. It is particularly geared towards students from diverse backgrounds, including those with financial need, students with disabilities, and students studying critical languages.
The Gilman Scholarship offers financial assistance to help cover the costs of tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, and international airfare. Recipients can receive up to $5,000 for a standard study abroad program. For students studying critical need languages, an additional Critical Need Language Award of up to $8,000 is available.
The program not only provides financial support but also promotes cultural exchange and understanding. It encourages scholarship recipients to engage with the local communities of their host countries and share their experiences upon their return to the United States.
Gilman-FLAD Portugal Scholarship for International Students, Study in Portugal. is available to undertake Undergraduate, Masters level programs at Portugal Universities.
Following subject are available to study under this scholarship program.
Successful applications will receive a study grant of $5000 to be used toward tuition, housing, travel, and related cost for up to one academic year in Portugal. Applicants who are studying Portuguese while abroad can apply for The Critical Need Language Award and get supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000.
This award is very competitive and offered to a limited number of Gilman scholars each year. Not all students who are studying these languages will receive $8,000. In addition to receiving additional funds for language study, students who are awarded the Critical Need Language Award and complete their Gilman Scholarship requirements will be offered the opportunity to take the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).
