This programme builds advanced knowledge in criminological theory, criminal justice responses and empirical research methods. Core topics typically include contemporary criminological theories, quantitative and qualitative research methods for crime and justice, comparative justice systems, and policy analysis. Elective or specialised modules often cover subjects such as policing and community safety, restorative justice and alternative dispute resolution, youth justice and offending, victimology, cybercrime and offending, and substance-related harms.

Students usually complete a combination of taught papers and a substantial applied project or research dissertation that allows you to investigate a focused question, evaluate policy or assess an intervention. The programme emphasises critical analysis, evidence-based policy thinking and ethical engagement, including consideration of tikanga Māori and the role of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in New Zealand justice practices. Study options are typically available full-time or part-time to accommodate working professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree, or equivalent tertiary qualification, with a sufficient level of academic achievement. Relevant undergraduate majors include criminology, law, psychology, sociology, social work, public policy or other social science disciplines. Applicants with substantial professional experience in justice-related agencies (for example policing, corrections, probation, community services or victim support) may also be considered where academic requirements are not strictly met.

All applicants must demonstrate competence in research methods and academic writing; some applicants may be asked to complete a brief statement of purpose or supply academic references. International applicants must meet AUT’s English language requirements for postgraduate study.
