What you'll study

The programme combines core technical modules in financial accounting, auditing, taxation and corporate reporting with applied subjects in accounting information systems, data analytics and forensic accounting. Typical modules include Advanced Financial Reporting, Auditing and Assurance, Business Taxation, Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Governance and Ethics, Accounting Information Systems, and Analytics for Accountants. Many cohorts also take a research methods or professional skills module and complete a capstone project, practicum or industry consultancy that applies accounting theory to real organisational problems.

Instruction is practice-oriented and often includes case work, group projects, simulated audits, client engagement scenarios and hands-on use of accounting and analytics software. Students may choose electives from other SMU schools to broaden expertise in areas such as finance, law, information systems or business analytics.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree. Candidates with a degree in accounting, finance, business or a quantitatively oriented discipline are most directly prepared for the core modules; applicants from non-accounting backgrounds may be required to complete prescribed foundation units or bridging modules.

Admission considers academic transcripts, references and a personal statement outlining motivation and career goals. Relevant work experience is advantageous but not always required. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency in English through recognised tests unless exempted by prior study in English. Some cohorts may request a GMAT/GRE score, particularly where academic records require additional evidence of aptitude.

Graduates typically move into roles in public practice (audit and tax), industry accounting (financial reporting, management accounting and internal audit), forensic accounting and advisory, corporate finance, and regulatory or tax authorities.
