What you'll study

The MD curriculum is an integrated programme that progresses from foundational biomedical sciences into intensive clinical practice. Early years focus on anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and medical genetics, alongside courses in medical ethics, evidence-based medicine and patient communication. As you move into the middle years you study pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, immunology and introduction to clinical disciplines such as internal medicine, surgery and paediatrics.

The final years are dominated by clinical rotations across core specialties: internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, emergency medicine, family medicine and public health. Practical training includes bedside teaching, supervised patient care in the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre, skills training in simulation laboratories and opportunities for elective placements. Research methodology and a compulsory research project or thesis are also part of the programme to prepare graduates for either clinical practice or academic careers.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically required to hold a secondary school leaving certificate with strong grades in biology and chemistry (or equivalent prerequisites). Selection normally involves assessment of academic records and proof of English-language proficiency; recognised test scores or an approved school-based qualification are accepted. Some applicants may be asked to attend an interview or take an entrance assessment covering physics, chemistry and biology to demonstrate aptitude for medical studies. International applicants should provide validated documentation of previous education and meet any additional enrolment checks required for study in Hungary.

Career prospects

Graduates earn a medical degree that qualifies them to progress to specialist training and clinical practice in hospitals and primary care after obtaining the necessary licence and internship requirements applicable in their country. Common career pathways include hospital-based specialties (e.g. internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, emergency medicine), general practice, academic medicine and medical research. Other options include roles in public health, health administration, clinical trials and medical affairs within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. The clinical and research training also provides a foundation for further graduate study such as PhD programmes.
