The Graduate Diploma of Sustainable Development provides a coherent programme of study in sustainability principles, policy and practice. Core themes include sustainable development theory, environmental and social impact assessment, sustainability governance and ethics, project design and evaluation, and indicators and measurement for sustainability.

• Sustainable Development Principles — foundations in the history, concepts and frameworks that underpin sustainability at local to global scales.
• Environmental and Social Impact Assessment — methods for assessing, managing and mitigating environmental and social risks associated with projects and policies.
• Sustainability Policy and Governance — analysis of policy instruments, corporate governance, stakeholder engagement and regulatory approaches.
• Sustainable Project Design and Management — practical skills in planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluating sustainability projects and programs.
• Indicators, Data and Reporting — techniques for measuring sustainability performance, sustainability reporting and use of indicator frameworks.
• Elective Options — electives typically allow focus on areas such as climate change adaptation, natural resource management, sustainable communities, or corporate sustainability.

Study is usually delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies and project work. Assessment commonly includes essays, policy briefs, project proposals and a capstone applied project or major assignment that synthesises learning from the programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution. Applicants with significant relevant professional experience in sustainability, environmental management, community development or related fields may also be considered.

• Academic requirements: a completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline.
• Professional experience: work experience in a relevant field can strengthen an application, particularly where academic qualifications are not recent.
• English language proficiency: international applicants must meet CQU’s English language requirements through recognised tests or prior study in English, where applicable.
• Additional requirements: some applicants may be asked to provide a CV, statement of purpose or referee reports to demonstrate suitability for the programme.
