What you'll study

This program builds on general nursing practice to focus on assessment, intervention and management of people with mental health issues across the lifespan. Core areas typically include advanced mental health assessment and formulation, risk assessment and management, evidence-based psychosocial interventions, psychopharmacology and medication management, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice, cultural competence in mental health care, and professional and ethical issues in mental health nursing.

Teaching combines theoretical coursework with practice-based learning. Students normally complete clinical practica in approved mental health settings such as inpatient units, community mental health teams, crisis and emergency services, and aged-care mental health services. The program emphasises reflective practice, interprofessional collaboration and application of research to clinical decision-making.

Entry requirements

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the relevant national nursing regulator (for Australia, AHPRA) or equivalent registration for international applicants.
• A relevant undergraduate nursing qualification (for example, a Bachelor of Nursing) or equivalent professional experience as assessed by the university.
• Evidence of recent clinical experience in nursing is commonly required; specific minimum periods of experience may be set by the school.
• Successful clearance of clinical placement requirements such as police checks, working with vulnerable people checks and up-to-date immunisations.
• English language proficiency for international applicants in line with university policy (e.g. approved test scores or prior study in English).
• Some applicants may be required to attend an interview or provide professional referees as part of the assessment process.

Career prospects

Graduates are equipped to work as specialist mental health nurses in a variety of settings including acute psychiatric units, community mental health services, outpatient clinics, drug and alcohol services, emergency departments and residential care. Typical roles include mental health clinician, case manager, community nurse, liaison nurse and roles within multidisciplinary teams. The qualification also supports progression to senior clinical roles such as Clinical Nurse Consultant, leadership positions within mental health services, mental health education roles, or further study at master’s level or higher leading to research or advanced practice pathways.
