What you'll study

The PhD is centred on original research complemented by advanced coursework and professional development. Students typically take modules in advanced pharmacology and therapeutics, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and drug delivery, advanced clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical biotechnology, and drug safety and regulatory science. Research training includes research design, biostatistics, advanced analytical techniques (chromatography, spectroscopy, bioassays), and specialised laboratory or clinical methods relevant to the chosen project.

The programme structure combines a period of taught postgraduate-level coursework and seminars with a major independent research project culminating in a doctoral thesis and viva voce examination. Candidates also participate in regular research group meetings, present at internal and external seminars, and are encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Elective modules or rotations may be available in areas such as clinical trials, pharmacoeconomics, personalised medicine, or formulation development depending on supervisory expertise.

Entry requirements

• A relevant master’s degree (MSc, MPharm, or equivalent) or a professional pharmacy degree (such as PharmD) with a strong academic record. Exceptional applicants with a first-class bachelor’s degree and significant research experience may be considered in line with university policy.
• A clear research proposal outlining the intended area of study and potential supervisor(s) or research group alignment.
• Evidence of research capability, typically demonstrated through prior research experience, publications, or strong recommendations from academic referees.
• Proficiency in English sufficient for postgraduate study; candidates may be asked to provide proof of language ability in accordance with university regulations.
• Successful interview with a panel of faculty members and agreement from an academic supervisor to oversee the proposed project.
