What you'll study

The programme combines advanced research training with applied modules in policy, development and social practice. Core study areas include research design and methodology (qualitative and quantitative methods), statistical analysis for social researchers, ethics and participatory approaches, policy analysis and programme evaluation. Students also study subject-specific modules that may cover areas such as social policy, migration and integration, poverty and social exclusion, community development, or education policy depending on elective choices.

• Research methods: design of research projects, survey methods, interview and focus-group techniques, thematic and content analysis.
• Quantitative analysis: applied statistics, use of statistical software, interpretation of data for policy-making.
• Policy and programme evaluation: theory and practice of evaluation, logic models, impact assessment, cost–benefit and qualitative appraisal.
• Applied topics: specialist electives addressing contemporary social issues such as migration, ageing, child welfare, social inclusion and labour market policy.
• Professional practice and placement: opportunities for an applied placement or internship with public agencies, NGOs or research bodies.
• Dissertation or major research project: an independent, supervised piece of applied research that demonstrates mastery of methods and subject knowledge.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised undergraduate degree in social sciences, humanities, health sciences or a closely related discipline. A strong academic record at honours level is typically required; relevant professional experience can be considered in lieu of formal qualifications in some cases. Applications usually require a CV, a personal statement outlining research interests and career goals, and academic or professional references.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency through an accepted qualification or test, unless they hold a degree taught in English. The programme may also invite prospective students to an interview or request a short research proposal as part of the selection process.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with skills suited to a wide range of roles in policy, research and practice. Typical career pathways include positions as policy analysts and advisors in government departments and intergovernmental organisations; research officers and analysts in academic, private or independent research centres; monitoring and evaluation specialists for development agencies and NGOs; and programme managers in public and third-sector organisations.

The degree also provides a solid foundation for further academic study, including doctoral research, and for consultancy work in areas such as social impact assessment, evidence synthesis and community engagement.
