What you'll study

The programme combines theoretical foundations with applied practice in aviation safety, risk and regulation. Core topics cover safety management systems (SMS), safety risk management, human factors, accident and incident investigation, and the regulatory frameworks that govern civil aviation. You will also study safety performance measurement, organisational safety culture, and methods for safety assurance and compliance.

• Safety Management Systems and Safety Policy — principles and lifecycle of SMS, implementation across operations, safety reporting and promotion of safety culture.
• Safety Risk Assessment and Quantitative Methods — hazard identification, probabilistic risk assessment, bow-tie analysis, safety cases and decision-support techniques used in aviation.
• Human Factors in Aviation — human performance, crew resource management, human error taxonomy, and designing systems to mitigate human-related risk.
• Accident and Incident Investigation — investigation methodology, evidence handling, causal analysis, and recommendations formulation consistent with international best practice.
• Aviation Regulation and Compliance — the structure and application of national and international regulation, certification and oversight processes used by civil aviation authorities and international organisations.
• Safety Assurance, Audit and Performance Measurement — auditing techniques, safety indicators and assurance processes to monitor and improve safety outcomes.

Teaching blends lectures, case studies, workshops and group projects, with guest lectures and input from industry practitioners. Practical exercises often use real-world datasets and scenarios drawn from airlines, airports, regulators and manufacturers.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK undergraduate degree (typically a 2:2 or above) or an equivalent qualification in engineering, science, mathematics, aviation, or a closely related discipline. Candidates with substantial relevant professional experience in aviation, safety, quality or regulatory roles may also be considered.

All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English. Typical proof accepted by the university includes recognised qualifications or recent, equivalent English language test scores at a postgraduate level. Additional documentation such as a CV, references and a personal statement describing relevant experience and motivation will be required as part of the application.
