What you'll study

The CNST-A230 Diploma combines practical workshop sessions with classroom-based theory to build core competence across construction disciplines. You will study units that cover site health and safety, construction technology, building materials and methods, technical drawing and digital skills, and basic principles of surveying and measurement.

• Construction Health and Safety: site safe working practices, risk assessment, CDM principles and use of personal protective equipment.
• Construction Technology and Materials: properties and correct use of common building materials, moisture control, insulation and basic structural concepts.
• Practical Carpentry and Masonry Skills: hand and power tool use, fabrication, joinery basics, block and bricklaying techniques and finishing.
• Site Measurement and Estimating: reading drawings, taking off quantities, basic estimating methods and introduction to cost control.
• Technical Drawing and BIM Introduction: interpreting engineering and architectural drawings, sketching, and an introduction to digital modelling tools used on-site.
• Workplace Communication and Professional Practice: teamwork, client liaison, site documentation, and understanding the roles within a construction project.
• Project Work and Practical Assignments: portfolio development through assessed practical tasks and a small-scale project simulating real site activities.

Entry requirements

Typical entry routes include completion of relevant Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications, GCSEs in English and mathematics (or recognised equivalents), or substantial relevant workplace experience. Applicants without formal qualifications but with demonstrable industry experience are considered through an interview and skills assessment. Mature students are welcomed and may be supported with additional short courses to meet literacy or numeracy needs.

Career prospects

Graduates of the CNST-A230 Diploma are prepared for a range of junior roles on construction sites and in related offices. Common destinations include positions as site operatives, multi-skilled trades assistants, junior carpenters or bricklayers, and assistant technicians in surveying or estimating. The diploma also provides a pathway into apprenticeships, supervisory posts such as assistant site supervisor, and further academic progression to HNC/HND or foundation degrees in construction and civil engineering.
