What you'll study

The diploma covers the fundamental technical and professional skills used in modern IT roles. You will study a mix of programming, systems and practical modules designed to build employable capabilities quickly.

• Programming and Software Development – core programming concepts using one or more contemporary languages (for example Python or Java), object-oriented design, version control and basic software testing.
• Web and Mobile Development – front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), server-side basics and an introduction to creating simple mobile applications.
• Databases and Data Management – relational databases, SQL, basic data modelling and an introduction to working with non-relational data stores.
• Computer Networks and Operating Systems – networking fundamentals, LAN/WAN concepts, common protocols and administration of modern operating systems.
• Cyber Security Fundamentals – basic security principles, common threats and best-practice defensive measures for systems and applications.
• Algorithms, Data Structures and Problem Solving – essential algorithmic thinking and data structure use for efficient coding and system design.
• Cloud and DevOps Introduction – an overview of cloud platforms, deployment concepts and simple automation/continuous integration principles.
• Professional and Project Skills – project management, teamwork, technical communication and a final practical project or capstone that integrates learning into a real-world deliverable.

Teaching is practical and workshop-based: expect lab sessions, group projects, code reviews and at least one assessed individual project. Many students can choose a work placement or industry-linked module where available.

Entry requirements

Entry is intended for learners with a good level of numeracy and literacy and an interest in computing. Typical entry expectations include one of the following:

• A relevant Level 3 qualification such as A-levels, BTEC or equivalent vocational qualification in computing, ICT or a related subject.
• Several GCSEs at a passing grade including mathematics and English plus relevant work experience or a recognised introductory IT qualification.
• Mature applicants with demonstrable experience in IT or related employment may be admitted following an interview and skills assessment.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of English through a recognised qualification or Coast Colleges' approved alternative. Admissions may include an interview, short skills test or submission of a portfolio of relevant work.

Career prospects

Graduates of the diploma typically progress into entry-level technical roles or continue their studies. Common job destinations include:

• Junior software developer / programmer
• Web developer or front-end developer
• IT support technician or service desk analyst
• Network technician or systems administrator (entry level)
• Database support or QA/test assistant

The diploma also provides a clear pathway to higher-level study: many students use it to progress onto a higher national diploma, foundation degree or to top up to a full bachelor’s degree in computer science or related disciplines.
