What you'll study

Students learn to integrate the instruments of statecraft into national strategy, apply principles of the American founding and the Western moral tradition to security questions, and assess the ideological challenges facing leaders in the modern era. Doctoral candidates must demonstrate expertise in any two areas of concentration such as instruments of statecraft (diplomacy; economics; public diplomacy and strategic influence; intelligence; military), a regional focus, or a customized topic.

• 72-credit track (for students without a relevant master’s): complete the IWP M.A. in Statecraft and Strategy requirements (52 credits) plus doctoral requirements; students on this track receive the M.A. upon successful completion and typically follow a five-year timeline.
• 20-credit track (for students who already hold an IWP M.A.): strictly doctoral-level courses, comprehensive exams, and dissertation; estimated completion time is three years.
• Transfer credit: applicants with a master’s from another institution may transfer up to 16 credit hours on a case-by-case review (leaving 56 credits to complete in that scenario).

• IWP/O 801: Grand Strategy and Full-Spectrum Statecraft (4 credits)

• IWP/O 804: Dissertation Writing and Advising I (2 credits)
• IWP/O 805: Dissertation Writing and Advising II (2 credits)
• IWP/O 806: Dissertation Writing and Advising III (2 credits)

Entry requirements

The program sets the highest standards for admission and matriculation.
