What you'll study

Required coursework and core topics include graduate-level biochemistry, immunology and biostatistics, plus three semesters of a graduate seminar (CBVS 505). Students also take one research-related elective or special topics course (CBVS 501) as advised by their committee. The majority of credit hours are fulfilled through experimental research (CBVS 708).

The programme identifies two principal research focus areas: Infectious Diseases (including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, immunology, and vaccine development) and Comparative Medicine and Therapeutics (including cancer biology, chemo- and precision-therapeutics, molecular immuno-physiology, pathology, molecular pathophysiology, and regenerative medicine).

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or equivalent and have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Application materials required are official transcripts, a personal statement, a resume/CV, a statement of research interests, and two letters of recommendation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; recommended target dates are November 1 for spring entry and May 1 for fall entry, with a summer start option available.

International applicants must meet English-language requirements: TOEFL iBT 85 (minimum listening 20), TOEFL CBT 225, TOEFL PBT 563, or IELTS 6.0 and above.

Career prospects

The degree is designed to prepare graduates for continued Ph.D. study or employment in academia, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and government agencies. The programme explicitly lists potential government employers such as USDA, NIH and CDC. Practical skills emphasized include experimental research techniques and quality control, data analysis, grant preparation, manuscript review, and oral presentation of research.
