What you'll study

Coursework spans foundational counseling knowledge, ethics, multicultural competence and applied clinical practice. Example courses and emphases named in program materials include:

• COUN510 – Assessment & Diagnostic Processes: survey of the counseling field, historical and theoretical foundations, professional roles, development of professional identity and beginning spiritual formation for counseling.
• COUN515 – Ethics: legal and ethical issues, an ethical decision-making model, professional standards and an overview of Iowa statutes governing practice, with attention to values and a biblical perspective.
• COUN520 – Social & Cultural Experiences: psychological and sociological factors shaping self-concept and cultural identity; development of multicultural competence, self-awareness and sensitivity to diversity.

Across courses students learn to design and implement school-wide prevention and intervention programs, apply ASCA competencies, and address cultural, social and environmental influences on student success.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a baccalaureate degree and official transcripts from accredited institutions (NWC alumni are exempt from submitting NWC undergraduate transcripts). Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; applicants below 3.0 may be considered for conditional admission. No GRE or application fee is required. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and qualified applicants are invited to a virtual interview with faculty. An updated résumé must be provided and a background check completed through CastleBranch.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for professional school counseling roles in elementary (K–8) or secondary (5–12) settings, able to implement school counseling programs, provide trauma-informed care, and work on systemic supports for student success. For Iowa-licensed teachers, the program leads to endorsement eligibility; others may pursue certification routes appropriate to their state or employer. Practicum and internship experiences provide local, supervised clinical training relevant to K–12 counseling positions.
