Programme overview

UW–Superior’s MSW is an advanced generalist graduate degree launching in fall 2027. The curriculum is delivered primarily online for working professionals and includes three in-person retreats for experiential learning, mindfulness practice and networking. The program foregrounds rural mental health, behavioral health, trauma-informed practice, community well-being, and integrates mindfulness and nature-based social work approaches.

What you'll study

Coursework prepares students to practice across multiple settings, populations and levels of intervention while emphasizing prevention, holistic approaches to resilience and healing, and relationship-centered practice. Instruction will include contributions from regional practitioners and field experts and draws on UW–Superior’s Pruitt Center for Mindfulness and Well-Being.

Entry requirements

The program offers two pathways. Advanced Standing is for applicants who hold a CSWE-accredited Bachelor of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited institution; that pathway can be completed in as little as one year. The Foundation Pathway is for those with bachelor’s degrees in other fields and can be completed in approximately two years.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for clinical and leadership roles in mental health, behavioral health and community settings, with particular applicability to rural and underserved areas. The curriculum supports readiness for graduates who wish to pursue licensure as independent clinical social workers and to strengthen organizations and communities through evidence-informed practice.
