Offered at Sheridan College

FieldFilm & Media Production

A two-year, practice‑focused master's that merges animation, games and immersive technologies for creators and technologists aiming at leadership roles in screen industries. Suited to applicants with undergraduate degrees or relevant diplomas plus experience who want applied research, inclusive design and work‑integrated learning.

What you'll study

The curriculum mixes core theory, applied research and project work. Full‑time students typically follow a five‑semester sequence; part‑time sequencing spreads the same set of courses across more semesters. Core and sample courses include:

  • Interdisciplinary Innovation (MEDA50746)
  • Immersive Narrative Theories (DESN51821)
  • Screen Industries Bootcamp (FILM52745)
  • Participative Leadership Development (BUSM59958)
  • Inclusive Storytelling (DESN56958)
  • Technology Innovation Strategies (TECH58880)
  • Trends in Immersive Narrative (DESN58096)
  • Business Finance and Entrepreneurship (BUSM57092)
  • Capstone/Thesis stream (RDES58690 then RPRJ/RPRJ or RPRJ/RPRJ alternatives for Capstone/Thesis 2 and 3)
  • Three Internship Prep courses leading to a mandatory Industry Internship (COWT57595)

Students choose between a capstone project route or a thesis route (each with staged project courses worth 6 credits in semesters 3 and 4). The program includes program electives and culminates in a mandatory industry internship, which may be an employer placement, a research project with an industry partner, a project with the student's employer or an alternative proposal subject to approval. The in‑person residency is required; after that students can continue fully in person or in hybrid online delivery depending on the chosen stream.

Entry requirements

There are two eligibility routes:

  • Option 1 — Bachelor's degree: an honours or other undergraduate degree in animation, VFX, game design and development, interactive/mobile/experiential design, digital communications, film, TV, computer science or computer engineering with a minimum GPA of 70% in the last two years. Applicants must submit a portfolio.
  • Option 2 — Diploma plus work experience: an Ontario College diploma or equivalent in the same fields with a minimum 70% GPA in the diploma, plus related work experience that demonstrates equivalence to degree‑level knowledge and at least two years of relevant leadership experience showing complex problem solving. Applicants on this route must submit a portfolio and complete a bridging course (Composition and Rhetoric) with a minimum grade of 70% before starting the program.

Selection is based on academic achievement and portfolio assessment; the portfolio package includes a statement of interest, resume, references and samples of work. Detailed portfolio requirements and submission instructions are provided by the program.

Career prospects

The program targets careers in screen‑based industries where animation, games and immersive experiences intersect. Graduates are prepared for roles that combine creative leadership and technical innovation—such as leading R&D projects, product or narrative design for interactive media, founding startups or driving innovation within studios and technology teams. The applied research and SIRT access support portfolio development and industry collaboration to position graduates for roles in animation studios, game companies, immersive experience firms and research‑oriented industry placements.
