The School of Biological Sciences PhD is an innovative doctoral training programme typically completed in about five years. It emphasizes broad exposure across biological disciplines in the first year, followed by selection of a research mentor and concentrated dissertation research. A BioAI PhD option is available for students who aim to integrate artificial intelligence and computational methods with biological research.
All first-year students follow the same full-time fall curriculum designed to build a broad foundation across the biosciences. Core courses focus on scientific reasoning, experimental design, quantitative skills, data analysis and management, and responsible conduct of research with components that address rigor and reproducibility. The first year also includes phased laboratory rotations. After year one, students concentrate on individualized advanced coursework and thesis research under a chosen Research Mentor.
The application requires official transcripts, a personal statement and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required and there is no minimum GPA threshold; admissions are reviewed holistically with significant weight given to letters of recommendation, coursework, research experience and context such as challenges faced. The program enrolls a small cohort (approximately nine students per entering class).
Graduates enter a wide variety of careers including academic research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industries, consulting and scientific publishing. The programme includes career development offerings such as a Career and Skills Development Course, a Career Directions Series, the Bioscience Enterprise Club, and opportunities for internships and experiential learning to help students explore nonacademic and industry paths.
