Doctoral training within the Matematika Doktori Iskola at Eötvös Loránd University comprises three specialized doctoral programmes (Theoretical Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Didactics). It suits applicants who already hold the prerequisite knowledge for doctoral study in mathematics and who can propose or join one of the school’s advertised doctoral topics.

What you'll study

The programme follows the university’s doctoral credit system and combines coursework, research activity, teaching and reporting. The total credit requirement for the doctoral degree is 240 credits. Doctoral credits are awarded for study activities, research work, progress reports and teaching duties.

The complex examination has a required minimum of 108 credits to be eligible and consists of two parts:

  • Elméleti rész (theoretical part): examination in two subjects — a major subject and a minor subject; the thematic areas indicated include theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics.
  • Disszertációs rész (dissertation part): an oral report covering the candidate’s literature knowledge, achieved research results to date, the research plan for the second phase of doctoral training, and a schedule for writing and publishing the dissertation. A written draft of this dissertation report — including completed studies, publications and the research plan — must be submitted in advance.

Entry requirements

Admission is by topic: applicants must apply for one of the doctoral topics announced on doktori.hu; topics are approved by the Doctoral School Council (DIT). For each programme the DIT commissions at least a three-member admission committee to hold an interview. The committee assesses academic preparation, language skills, prior scientific work, degree diploma and university performance, and the feasibility and promise of the proposed research plan. Evaluative criteria listed include grades, diploma classification, OTDK and faculty TDK awards, TDK works, publications, conference participation and interview performance. The DIT proposes admissions decisions to the TDT.

Career prospects

The programme is a research doctorate; graduates proceed to roles that require doctoral-level training. (The school maintains alumni contacts via supervisors, the ELTE Alumni network and joint projects.)
