Programme overview

The MPhil is awarded on the basis of an original thesis demonstrating mastery of advanced research techniques, together with completion of applicable coursework and a successful oral defence of the thesis. Candidates undertake substantive supervised research as the core of the degree.

What you'll study

• Research thesis grounded in innovative work and methodological rigour.
• A minimum of three taught courses (totaling 12 credits) to complement the research; additional courses may be required by the Advisory Committee but are normally audited.
• Oral defence (viva) of the submitted thesis.
• Students may be considered for upgrade to a PhD if progression requirements are satisfied and supervisor support is given (see institutional examination procedures).

Entry requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an approved UTT with a B+ average or Upper Second Class honours, or an equivalent GPA.
• Applicants with a lower than B+ average may be considered if they have compensating experience and/or qualifications.
• Other professional qualifications and experience may be accepted where deemed suitable by the relevant Programme Teaching and Learning Committee.

The programme is designed to strengthen research competence and is appropriate for those planning further doctoral study or roles that demand advanced investigative, analytical and writing skills. Graduates typically progress to academic research, continued postgraduate study, or professional roles where independent research capabilities are valued.
