What you'll study

Coursework emphasizes concentrated literary study that informs an original thesis project. In addition to literature and writing courses, candidates must take two graduate Professional Education courses. The program requires demonstration of competency in a second language or completion of an approved alternative competency (statistics/computer applications or teaching with technology) as described below.

• Deep study of literature by author, period, or place to develop a thesis topic
• Two graduate Professional Education courses
• Thesis research and writing under advisor supervision
• Comprehensive assessment consisting of three essay exams and an oral thesis defense
• Graduate competency requirement (choose one): modern language reading knowledge at second‑year level (French, German, Russian, or Spanish, or another language by permission); or a college course in computer applications/statistics with grade B or better or proficiency exam; or a college course in teaching with technology with grade B or better or proficiency exam

Entry requirements

Applicants must apply through the Graduate School and submit additional materials to the Department of English: a letter of application addressed to the Director of Graduate Studies (stating the desired degree and, if applicable, intent to seek a Graduate Assistantship and statement of purpose), and three letters of recommendation (the Graduate School requires two; the department requires three). Applications for assistantships should meet the department deadline; general graduate applications are accepted at any time.

Career prospects

The program is especially appropriate for licensed secondary or middle school teachers seeking advanced content knowledge and pedagogical skill. It may also serve those preparing to teach at community colleges. Graduate Assistants typically gain classroom experience by teaching a section of freshman composition each semester.

Scholarships & funding angle

Bemidji State offers in-state/reciprocity tuition rates to all graduate students. Some students may qualify for Graduate Assistantships, which include a tuition waiver and stipend in exchange for departmental teaching or research duties; applications for assistantships should be received by March 19 for full consideration for the following academic year.
