An interdisciplinary Master's that combines genomics with ecology, evolution and physiology to study organisms in their natural contexts. Suited to students aiming for rigorous research experience leading to PhD study, professional programmes, or work in biotechnology-related sectors.

What you'll study

Students gain contemporary laboratory and field experience and exposure to instrumentation used in integrative genomic research. Core areas of learning include:

  • Integrating genomics with ecological, evolutionary and physiological contexts to select appropriate organisms and biological systems for study.
  • Molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, quantitative PCR (qPCR), cloning and next-generation sequencing.
  • Use and understanding of molecular, statistical and database tools for genomic analyses.
  • Designing and conducting original research with opportunities to present findings at regional or national scientific conferences.

Entry requirements

Applicants must complete a BHSU graduate application and submit an official BS/BA transcript demonstrating a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, plus a non-refundable $35 application fee. A Curriculum Vitae is required and should include names and contact information for two to three references, relevant research experience, any publications or presentations and awards, and a brief personal statement (approximately 300 words) identifying a preferred faculty mentor and explaining how that mentor's research aligns with the applicant's goals. International transcripts for degrees earned outside the U.S. must be evaluated by World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE); international applicants should consult the university's International Relations & Global Engagement office for visa and English proficiency guidance.

Career prospects

The programme prepares graduates for advanced study such as Ph.D. programmes or professional degree programmes, and for roles in biotechnology-related businesses. Graduates emerge with practical wet-lab and field skills, familiarity with genomic analytical tools, and experience communicating research at scientific meetings.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

MSIG students may apply for financial support through Graduate Teaching Assistantships and Graduate Research Assistantships, which provide avenues for funded engagement in teaching or research while completing the thesis requirement.
