What you'll study

The curriculum blends formational work, biblical and theological studies, history, a focused ministry emphasis, supervised ministry, and electives. Students complete 75 credits total, delivered through semester-long and intensive formats.

• Foundational Courses (13.5 credits): spiritual formation and personal practice, a practicum-bearing course, Diversity, Community, and Conflict, and Discernment of Call & Gifts.
• Biblical Studies (9 credits): Introduction to the First Testament, Introduction to the Second Testament, plus a Bible elective.
• Theological Studies (12 credits): introductory theological reflection, ethics, interfaith dialogue, and a theology elective.
• History (9 credits): American religious history, a history elective, and Introduction to Quakerism.
• Emphasis (13.5 credits): four courses in an area such as Pastoral Care, Pastoral Ministry, Peace & Justice, Quaker Ministry, Spirituality, Ministry of Writing, Entrepreneurial Ministry, Christian Spirituality, or Teaching. One course in the emphasis includes an extra 1.5-credit practicum. Students may petition for a self-designed emphasis if faculty expertise supports it.
• Synthesis Capstone: Supervised Ministry (9 credits) and Comprehensive Seminar (3 credits).
• General Electives (6 credits): two electives from the curriculum to broaden or deepen ministry-related skills.

Entry requirements

The program enrolls residential and ESR Access students; individuals interested in taking individual courses may apply as Occasional Students (eligible to take ESR 100–200 level courses and, with permission, some 300-level courses) and may register for up to two courses per semester. Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for pastoral ministry, Quaker ministry, chaplaincy and hospital ministries, religious education, campus ministry, spiritual direction, peace and justice work, ministry-related writing, and other forms of religious leadership. Some students use the M.Div. for professional certification or as preparation for doctoral or other advanced programs.
