What you'll study

Programme Structure: The Atlantic World concentration is centered around doctoral research complemented by active participation in the Atlantic World Workshop. This workshop serves as a collaborative seminar where students and faculty engage in discussions about ongoing research and new scholarly developments.

• Workshop themes: Key topics include Atlantic diasporas, the evolution of slavery, cross-regional political and religious movements, literature and language, gender studies, and the dynamics of Atlantic trade, particularly from 1500 to 1900.
• Interdisciplinary engagement: The workshop encourages diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, fostering discussions on innovative perspectives in Atlantic history, including cultural history and ethnohistory.
• Works-in-progress sessions: Throughout the academic year, sessions feature presentations from both emerging and established researchers. Papers are shared in advance, and these sessions welcome participation from the broader scholarly community.
• Dissertation development: Students utilize feedback from the workshop to refine their research design, historiographical context, and various dissertation components, including proposals, literature reviews, methodologies, and writing phases.
