What you'll study

The programme combines broad surveys of literary history with focused study in genre, period and theory. Core coursework typically includes introductory and advanced modules in British and American literature, world and postcolonial literatures, Shakespeare, modern and contemporary fiction, poetry and drama. You will also study language and linguistics, literary theory and criticism, and advanced composition and rhetoric.

Students usually complete a mix of required major courses and electives, allowing specialisation in areas such as creative writing, professional writing, film and literature, or rhetoric and composition. The degree often culminates in a senior seminar or capstone project involving sustained research or a substantial creative portfolio.
