What you'll study

This doctoral programme combines advanced coursework, applied research and a sustained dissertation project to develop scholar-practitioners who can design, implement and evaluate professional learning initiatives in specific subject areas. Core themes include theories of teacher learning, curriculum and assessment, leadership for professional development, and research design and methods (quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods).

• Core seminars: foundations of teacher education, adult learning theory, policy and equity in professional learning, and leadership for school improvement.
• Research methods sequence: advanced statistics, qualitative inquiry, mixed-methods design, programme evaluation and assessment development.
• Subject-area specialisation: discipline-specific pedagogy and content knowledge (for example, literacy, mathematics, science or social studies) with coursework and practicum aligned to the candidate’s chosen subject area.
• Applied work: internships or directed practicum in district professional development offices, curriculum departments or teacher education programmes to apply research to practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a master’s degree in education or a closely related field and have several years of professional experience in K–12 schools, higher education or educational organisations. Typical application materials include:

• Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended demonstrating strong academic performance at the graduate level.
• A current CV or résumé documenting professional roles and responsibilities in education.
• A personal statement or statement of purpose that outlines research interests, proposed subject-area specialisation and professional goals.
• Letters of recommendation (usually two to three) from academic and/or professional referees who can speak to your potential for doctoral-level study and research.
