What you'll study

This programme combines language proficiency, literary study, and linguistic analysis across the Romance language family (commonly including French, Spanish and Italian). Core language coursework develops speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through progressive-level classes and practicum. Literary modules examine texts from medieval to contemporary periods in translation and in the original languages, covering genres such as poetry, drama, and the novel, alongside cultural and historical context.

Linguistics components introduce phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics, emphasising comparative perspectives on Romance languages. Applied options include translation and interpretation, language acquisition and pedagogy, corpus linguistics, and discourse analysis. The curriculum typically culminates in a senior capstone or research project, where students synthesize linguistic theory and language study through independent research, a practicum, or a portfolio.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet the College's general admission criteria. Successful candidates typically present strong grades in humanities courses, particularly in English and in any secondary-language study undertaken. Prior study of a Romance language is recommended but not always required; placement testing is used to place students at the appropriate level.

Saint Michael's considers the whole application, including academic record, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement that demonstrates interest in languages and cultures. International applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate English proficiency via acceptable test scores or other evidence as defined by the College. Transfer applicants should provide college transcripts and may receive credit for prior language or linguistics coursework following departmental review.
