What you'll study

The programme combines core training in historical methods and historiography with specialised courses on medieval and early modern Europe. You will study topics such as the transformation of Roman and post‑Roman societies, the rise of medieval Christendom, the Black Death and demographic change, urban and commercial life, the Renaissance and humanism, the Reformation and confessional conflict, and state formation in early modern Europe.

• Core history skills: historical research methods, archival practice, palaeography and manuscript studies, historiography, and digital history techniques for editing and presenting primary sources.
• Thematic and regional modules: subjects like Medieval Religion and Society, Medieval Cities and Trade, The Renaissance in Italy, Early Modern Germany and the Reformation, Early Modern Britain, and Cultural Exchange in the Early Modern Atlantic.
• Language and primary sources: optional or recommended language study (Latin is especially valuable; modern languages such as French, German, or Spanish are also useful) and courses that emphasise working directly with primary texts and translated sources.
• Capstone and research: a senior seminar and substantial original research project or thesis under faculty supervision, often drawing on archival materials, rare books or local collections.
• Complementary study: students are encouraged to take modules in related fields such as art history, religious studies, archaeology, classics, and museum studies to broaden interpretive tools and employability.

Entry requirements

Applicants should meet the general undergraduate admissions standards of the University of Mary Washington and submit a completed application with high school transcripts, a personal statement, and a secondary school record. Strong preparation includes coursework in history and humanities, demonstrated writing ability, and, where available, study of world history or classical languages. Transfer applicants must provide college transcripts and a record of academic success in college‑level courses.

International applicants are expected to demonstrate English proficiency through an approved test or other institutional evidence of readiness to study in English. Applicants with relevant extracurricular experience — such as internships at museums, involvement in history clubs, or independent research projects — are viewed favourably.
