What you'll study

The programme combines advanced coursework, qualifying examinations and an extended research dissertation. Early stages typically include core graduate-level courses in areas such as algorithms, advanced operating systems, machine learning and statistical methods, software engineering, databases and computer networks. Students also choose specialised electives that reflect applied emphases — for example artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science and analytics, cybersecurity, computational science, human–computer interaction, or software systems.

After completing required coursework and any teaching or practicum obligations, students take a qualifying or comprehensive examination to demonstrate readiness for independent research. The principal activity of the later years is original research under the supervision of a faculty advisor, culminating in a written dissertation and oral defence. Throughout the programme students are encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed conferences and journals and to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects across the university and with external partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant graduate degree (such as an MS in Computer Science or a closely related discipline) or an outstanding bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field with substantial undergraduate preparation. Typical application materials include an academic transcript, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees. Research experience, evidence of programming and quantitative skills, and a well-defined research direction strengthen an application.

International applicants will be asked to demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test or accepted equivalent, unless exempt. The department evaluates candidates holistically; some applicants with strong research potential but non-traditional backgrounds may be admitted and required to complete bridge coursework.
