What you'll study

The programme combines core statistical theory with applied biostatistical methods and computing. Students typically take courses in statistical inference, linear models and regression, generalised linear models, and probability as the foundation. Biostatistics‑focused coursework often includes survival analysis, longitudinal and repeated measures, categorical data analysis, clinical trials design and Bayesian methods for biomedical data. Computational and data‑science skills are emphasised through classes in statistical computing, resampling and simulation and scripting in R or Python.

Students may choose between thesis and non‑thesis options: the thesis route focuses on original research under faculty supervision, while the non‑thesis pathway includes a practicum or project that applies methods to a real biological or public‑health dataset. Interdisciplinary opportunities are common — many students collaborate with researchers in veterinary medicine, public health, environmental science or the health system to gain applied experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, biostatistics, data science, or a closely related quantitative field. Typical preparation includes coursework in calculus, linear algebra, introductory probability and mathematical statistics, as well as experience with at least one programming language or statistical software (for example R, Python, SAS).

Required application materials generally include official academic transcripts, a statement of purpose describing research and career goals, letters of recommendation, and a curriculum vitae or résumé. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test if their prior degree was not taught in English. Some applicants with degrees in other quantitative disciplines may be admitted conditional on completing prerequisite courses.
