What you'll study

This interdisciplinary degree introduces students to the methods and history of philosophical thought alongside the study of religious traditions, texts and practices. Core philosophy topics typically include logic and critical reasoning, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, and the history of Western philosophy from Antiquity to modernity. Religious-studies modules cover biblical studies, Christian theology and history, comparative religion and world faiths, religion and society, and contemporary issues such as religion and politics or religion and science.

Students normally progress from introductory survey courses to more specialised options and seminars. Typical third- and fourth-year work includes advanced seminars in topics such as philosophy of religion, ethics of religion, pastoral theology, feminist and liberation theologies, and courses in research methods in the humanities. All majors complete a senior capstone or research project that emphasises independent study and may include a faculty-supervised thesis, a practicum (for students pursuing ministry or community work), or an internship with a local organisation.

Coursework emphasises close reading of primary texts, essay writing, group discussion, and oral presentation. Students are encouraged to enrich their degree with study abroad, cross-disciplinary electives (for example in sociology, history, psychology or political science), and experiential learning through campus ministry and community partnerships.
