What you'll study

This programme combines practical training, theoretical study and production work. You will take core modules in acting technique, voice and speech, movement for the actor, scene study and audition technique. Technical theatre and design modules include stagecraft, scenic design, lighting, sound, costume construction and theatre technology. Complementary academic modules cover theatre history, dramatic literature, playwriting, directing, and arts management.

• Performance and acting: improvisation, character development, voice and diction, on-camera technique, and ensemble work.
• Production and design: set, lighting and sound design; stagecraft; costume and makeup; properties and scenic painting.
• Theory and history: survey of world and American drama, theatre criticism, script analysis, and playwriting workshops.

• Capstone and assessment: final-year projects typically include a senior showcase, design portfolio or a directed production and reflective research or placement report.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold an appropriate secondary school qualification or recognised equivalent. Admission normally requires an academic transcript and a personal statement outlining theatre experience and goals. For performance and some design tracks applicants are expected to audition or submit a creative portfolio; the department provides guidance on audition material and portfolio content. Additional materials may include letters of recommendation and evidence of extracurricular theatre involvement. International applicants must meet the university's English language requirements.
