What you'll study

The programme emphasises contemporary issues in corrections, evidence-based practices for offender assessment and rehabilitation, and the administration of correctional institutions and community-based programmes. You will study advanced criminological theory and policy analysis alongside applied topics such as risk/needs assessment, offender classification, case management, reentry and restorative justice.

• Research methods and statistics — quantitative and qualitative methods for evaluating programmes and informing policy.
• Correctional administration and leadership — organisational behaviour, budgeting, staff supervision and ethical decision-making in correctional settings.
• Offender assessment and treatment — assessment tools, cognitive-behavioural interventions, substance misuse treatment and programmes for specialised populations.
• Community supervision and reentry — probation and parole practices, transitional services, housing and employment strategies that reduce recidivism.
• Juvenile justice and specialised populations — approaches to youth offenders and considerations for women, veterans and those with mental health needs.
• Policy, ethics and law — legal frameworks, human rights, and ethical issues in corrections and public safety policy.
• Capstone project or practicum — an applied research project or supervised placement with a correctional agency or community provider to integrate theory with practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in criminal justice, criminology, social sciences, public administration or a closely related discipline. Relevant professional experience in corrections, law enforcement, probation/parole, social services or allied fields is beneficial and may strengthen an application.

• Official undergraduate transcripts demonstrating satisfactory academic performance.
• A current curriculum vitae or résumé outlining education and work experience.
• A personal statement describing academic and professional goals and reasons for pursuing the master’s in corrections.
• Letters of recommendation, typically one to three, from academic or professional referees who can speak to the applicant’s readiness for graduate study.
• International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised tests or prior study in English, in line with university requirements.
