What you'll study

This doctoral programme emphasises both theoretical and empirical approaches to Germanic languages and their literatures, with strong integration of linguistics. Core study typically includes: advanced syntax and semantics focusing on Germanic language data; phonology and morphology; historical and comparative Germanic linguistics; sociolinguistics and dialectology; research methods (quantitative and qualitative); and literary theory and cultural studies related to German-language texts. Students take a mix of seminars and directed readings, complete qualifying examinations, and produce a dissertation that makes an original contribution to the field.

Entry requirements

Admission expects a strong academic background in linguistics, Germanic languages, literature, or a closely related discipline. Typical requirements include:

• Academic qualifications: a master's degree (or equivalent) in linguistics, German studies, comparative literature, or a related field. Applicants with an outstanding bachelor’s degree and exceptional preparation may sometimes be considered.
• Transcripts: official transcripts demonstrating high academic achievement.
• Writing sample: a substantive sample of academic writing (e.g. MA thesis chapter, seminar paper) showing analytical and research skills.
• Letters of recommendation: typically three letters from academic referees who can assess research potential.
• Language proficiency: advanced German proficiency is normally required; non-native English speakers must demonstrate English proficiency by accepted tests unless exempt.
• Statement of purpose: a research statement outlining interests, proposed areas of study, and potential faculty mentors.
• Additional materials: CV, and where relevant, evidence of prior teaching experience or publications.
