What you'll study

The Sociology major combines core theory and methods with elective study of specialised social areas. You will take introductory courses in sociological theory and social research methods, and follow with intermediate and advanced modules that emphasise quantitative and qualitative analysis.

• Core theory: classical and contemporary sociological theory, foundations of social thought and critical perspectives on institutions.
• Research methods: courses in social research design, statistics for social sciences, survey methods, qualitative methods (interviewing, ethnography) and data analysis using common software tools.
• Substantive topics: social stratification and inequality, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, urban sociology, family and life course, work and organisations, crime and deviance, health and society, population and demography.
