What you'll study

The Sociology programme combines theoretical foundations with empirical research and applied experience. Core topics cover classical and contemporary sociological theory, research methods (qualitative and quantitative), social inequality, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, family and life course, deviance and social control, and organisations and work. Students take a sequence of methods courses that introduce survey design, statistical analysis, and qualitative techniques such as interviewing and ethnography.

• Capstone: A senior seminar or independent research project (senior thesis) integrates theoretical knowledge and research skills; students design and carry out a research project under faculty supervision and present their findings.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have completed secondary education or an equivalent qualification. Typical admissions materials include official academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining interest in sociology and relevant experiences, and at least one academic reference. Ripon College considers the whole applicant and places value on academic potential demonstrated through coursework in social studies, mathematics/statistics, and writing.

• Domestic applicants: High-school diploma or equivalent with a record of academic achievement; preparation in English and quantitative reasoning is recommended.
