What you'll study

This programme blends intensive language training in German with courses in literature, culture and core areas of linguistics. Early semesters focus on communicative competence—listening, speaking, reading and writing—through progressive language courses and conversation labs. As you advance, you choose from modules such as German composition and conversation, German literature from medieval to contemporary periods, film and cultural studies, and German-speaking world history and society.

The linguistics component covers foundational and applied topics: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics and language acquisition. Students encounter methods in linguistic analysis, descriptive field methods, and basic computational approaches to language data. The degree commonly culminates in a capstone such as a senior research project, advanced seminar, or internship-based practicum.

Opportunities for experiential learning are integral: study-abroad exchanges with partner institutions in German-speaking countries, community-based language tutoring, translation and interpreting practica, and collaborative projects with other departments (for example, Computer Science for language technology work or Education for teaching-focused pathways).

Entry requirements

• Secondary school completion or equivalent qualification acceptable to the university.
• A solid academic record with preparation in language and humanities is recommended; prior study of German is advantageous but many programmes offer placement so beginners can enter the sequence appropriately.
• International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through an approved test or recognised equivalent; US applicants may be subject to standard university admissions criteria such as GPA and required high-school coursework.
