What you'll study

The BA in English Language and Literature combines study of British, American and global literatures with courses in language, composition and critical theory. You will take introductory surveys in literature and language, and progress to focused courses such as Shakespeare, Victorian and Modernist fiction, contemporary American literature, and world literature in translation. Core work in literary theory and methods trains you to analyse texts and contexts; coursework in rhetoric and advanced composition sharpens persuasive and research writing skills.

Options and electives commonly available include creative writing (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction), linguistics and sociolinguistics, digital humanities, rhetoric and composition pedagogy, film and literature, and courses in culturally-focused literatures (African American, Native American, Latino/a studies and postcolonial studies). Applicants are expected to hold a secondary school diploma or equivalent. Schools normally look for a solid record in English-language subjects and evidence of strong reading and writing skills.
