What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines foundational sciences, nursing theory and progressive clinical experiences. Early semesters focus on anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, human development and pathophysiology alongside communication and ethics. Core nursing modules cover health assessment, pharmacology, basic and advanced nursing skills, medical‑surgical nursing, maternal‑child and paediatric care, mental health/psychiatric nursing and community and public health nursing.

Upper‑level study emphasises complex care, leadership and systems thinking with courses in nursing research, evidence‑based practice, quality improvement, health policy, population health and nursing administration. Students participate in simulation lab practice and multiple clinical rotations in acute, ambulatory and community settings, culminating in a practicum or capstone that integrates clinical decision‑making, research appraisal and management skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically require a high school diploma or equivalent with completion of prerequisite coursework such as biology, chemistry, mathematics and English composition. Admission to the pre‑licensure BSN is competitive and considers cumulative GPA, performance in prerequisite science courses and a personal statement or interview.

Many nursing programmes also require an entrance assessment (for example a standardised nursing admissions test), current CPR certification, up‑to‑date immunisations, a criminal background check and drug screening prior to clinical placement. Applicants who are already licensed RNs can often apply to RN‑to‑BSN pathways, for which previous nursing education and an active licence are required.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national nursing licensure examination and begin practice as registered nurses in hospitals, community clinics, long‑term care, public health agencies and home care. Career pathways include staff nurse roles in acute care, specialty practice areas (for example critical care, paediatrics or obstetrics), case management and discharge planning.

With experience and additional study, BSN graduates move into leadership and administrative roles such as charge nurse, nurse manager or clinical nurse leader. The research and evidence‑based practice components also prepare graduates for roles in quality improvement, clinical research coordination and health policy. Many graduates continue to postgraduate nursing study (MSN, DNP or PhD) for advanced practice, education or research careers.
