What you'll study

This major combines core topics from both sociology and anthropology to give you a broad understanding of social behaviour, cultural variation and social institutions. You will study foundational theories in social science, ethnographic and qualitative methods, as well as quantitative research techniques and statistical analysis.

• Introduction to Sociology and Anthropology — foundations, key concepts and comparative perspectives.
• Social Theory — classical and contemporary theorists and the ways theory informs research and policy.
• Ethnographic Methods — participant observation, interviewing and qualitative analysis.
• Research Methods and Statistics — survey design, data analysis and interpretation for social research.
• Specialist electives — topics may include medical anthropology, urban sociology, family and gender studies, economic anthropology, migration, race and ethnicity, or anthropology of religion.
• Fieldwork and Applied Projects — opportunities for local community-based research, internships or short-term field courses, often supported by faculty supervision.
• Senior Seminar and Capstone — a year-long research or practicum experience culminating in a major paper or project demonstrating independent research skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to present a strong liberal-arts preparatory record with evidence of academic rigour and writing ability. Typical admission criteria include a completed secondary-school qualification or equivalent and a portfolio of academic transcripts.
