What you'll study

The Master of Science in Nursing offers a mix of core graduate nursing courses and specialised pathways so students can focus on Nursing Administration, Nursing Research or Clinical Nursing. Core study typically covers advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, nursing research methods and health policy and systems. Students in the Nursing Administration pathway study organisational leadership, finance and human resources for healthcare, quality and safety improvement, and strategic planning. The Nursing Research pathway emphasises research design, biostatistics, grant writing and translating evidence into practice, preparing graduates to conduct or collaborate on clinical research. The Clinical Nursing pathway focuses on advanced clinical decision-making, complex case management and specialty practicum experiences relevant to the student’s clinical focus.

Programme delivery combines classroom seminars, case-based learning and supervised clinical or practicum hours in partnering healthcare settings. Many students also make use of FIU’s simulation facilities and interprofessional learning opportunities to practise advanced skills before entering clinical placements.

Entry requirements

• Current, unrestricted RN licence in the United States (or eligibility to hold one where required by clinical placement).
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a regionally accredited institution; some applicants with an associate degree and substantial professional experience may be considered for ADN-to-MSN or bridge options where available.
• A competitive undergraduate GPA; specific minimums are set by the school and may be higher for some specialisms.
• Professional résumé or CV demonstrating clinical experience.
• Personal statement outlining professional goals and chosen specialism (Administration, Research or Clinical Nursing).
• References, normally at least two professional referees who can speak to clinical practice and leadership potential.
• Successful completion of any additional programme requirements such as interviews, background checks, immunisations and drug screening necessary for clinical placements.

Career prospects

Graduates of the programme move into a wide range of roles across acute care, community health, academic and research settings. Typical career paths include nurse manager or director of nursing, clinical nurse specialist, nurse researcher or coordinator on clinical trials, advanced practice roles where clinically focused, quality improvement and patient safety leader, and faculty positions in nursing education. The Administration track prepares nurses for operational leadership and executive roles in hospitals and health systems; the Research track opens pathways into clinical research teams, outcomes research and translational science; and the Clinical Nursing track strengthens advanced practice in specialty areas and complex patient management.
