Because the programme includes clinical placements, applicants must be able to meet health and background screening requirements required by clinical partners (for example, immunisations, drug screening and criminal background checks). Transfer applicants and those with prior college coursework should provide official transcripts; some progression points within the degree may require minimum GPA thresholds or successful completion of core science courses.
Graduates qualify to pursue careers as medical laboratory scientists (clinical laboratory technologists) in hospital laboratories, private diagnostic laboratories, public health and reference laboratories, blood banks, and biotechnology companies. Common roles include bench scientist in clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics and transfusion services, as well as positions in quality assurance, laboratory management and sales or technical support for diagnostic instrumentation.
The degree also provides a foundation for further study in related health professions (for example physician assistant programmes, graduate studies in clinical sciences, or biomedical research) and for certification by national professional bodies that credential practising laboratory scientists.
